Sophie Anne Green: Fare Mendip (degree show 2021)

Fare Mendip, a phrase coined by Green meaning faer (a journey) through the Mendips (countryside near Bristol), was the title of one of my favourite exhibits of the degree show this year. It was a very understated yet beautifully presented series of photo etchings depicting a series of walks/ 'journeys' undertaken by Green that documented her encounter with the 'historical, moving landscape', the project a culmination of her own personal experience adding to the geological history of the land upon which she walked: a coming together of the past and the present.

I find that memory and landscape are strong themes that often result. in thought-provoking work. I love. how the intricate etchings almost look like photographs, their black and white nature symbolic of old fashioned photography. Sometimes imagery without written word can convey a whole plethora of emotions that are undefinable by words, especially those evoked by a journey, but are best described in a series of images, just like Green does here.
