Peony Gent: Not today but then
Peony Gent is one of my all-time favourite illustrators and creatives, and recently I've been especially loving her comic style zines and her ability to create something professional that is is still able to look effortless and playful.
'not today but then' is clearly Gent working through some emotions, following the narrative from 'then' up to 'today', and seems almost cathartic. The text is ambiguous but very emotive and also descriptive in a sensory manner, Gent's accompanying illustrations seem to respond to these drawn out feelings as we, the reader, follow the narrative arc.
The colours also meaner from pops of yellow in the first few pages, to monochrome in the centre of the comic as we get dealt the bulk of emotion, and then back to yellow for the release, or 'healing'. This book is structured cleverly, and all the elements make for a very well-rounded and beautifully designed portrayal of a personal-storytelling through poetic prose and comic sketches.
