Pati Scobey

 Pati Scobey has worked in painting, printmaking, and book arts for over twenty years. Her book ‘The Back of Time’ is a visual experience of structural ingenuity (like an artists’ version of a pop-up book) composed of relief etchings, intaglio, watercolour, pen and ink drawing and collage. The paper is bound in a ‘wire-edged’ structure and the book itself comes in a box. Not only has Scobery masterfully combined many elements to create something still highly sophisticated, but she has created more than simply a book to read- but a book to experience.

Scobey’s organic, primordial shapes and colourful light against darkness suggest a whimsical yet contemplative universe. Laser split pages and alternate openings to the book cause the reader to enter a journey through the cosmos and time. Bound at the spine and the fore edge, this book opens from a laser-cut crack in the middle of the pages and reveals a progressive series of glimpses into a possible parallel universe, rich with colour, magic, and movement.
