Hatty Staniforth

Hattie Stainforth is an illustrator based in Stroud, whose favourite topics include nature, food and folklore. She garners her distinctively inviting work from 'happy accidents' arising from her use of analog tools such as scissors and paint brushes.
Staniforth takes on a playful and spontaneous approach to making, often composing the outlines of her illustrations using a light box, and utilising techniques such as traditional drawing methods, collage and at home printmaking.

Through such a varied combination of skills she is able to always produce something new and surprising, yet still retain the essence of her own personal stylistic touch.

I particularly love Staniforth's monoprint series. The simple yet striking contrast between the black and the red, alongside the delicate, broken line work results in a beautifully fragile, handcrafted image that clearly demonstrates to the viewer that the process of making art is a labour of love.

Of course, 'simple' does not mean easy. In Staniforth's case, her work is majestically refined and yet still entirely striking, such as her collection of GIF style animations. Again, there is a clear contrast of colours, and the bursting design is both captivating and fun, reminiscent of a clear passion and drive for the creative process and communication through drawing.
