Emma Carlisle

Emma Carlisle is an artist and lecturer, based in Plymouth, UK. Her work is primarily concerned with the landscape she encounters in Devon and Cornwall, a subject that allows her to revel in colour and expressive marks in pencil, watercolour, gouache and acrylic. A burst of abstract, dynamic marks often becomes the land on which a small cottage or tree sits upon.

I've always been a huge fan of Emma's work, especially her creative journey. After suffering what she describes as a 'burn-out', she simply went back to the basics of what she knew: location drawing and observation. From there she began to develop a new experimental style using mark making and colour as the primary focus to document the surrounding landscape in a more liberating and inspiring way.

Her work branches into several outlets, including larger scale abstractions alongside her quick, expressive observational studies. I love the boldness of Emma's marks, you can clearly see each scrawl and line in exquisite detail and I personally believe it renders each of her drawings even more enticing. The mechanism of drawing is incredibly fascinating.
